Wave Hill Walk-off

Category: Event
Location:Kalkaringi, Northern Territory, Australia
Summary Information:
In 1966 Vincent Lingiari led the Walk-off from Wave Hill Station in protest against intolerable working conditions and inadequate wages. The protesters established a camp at Watti Creek and demanded the return of some of their traditional lands. This began a seven year fight by the Gurindji people to obtain title to their land.
Mr Lingiari's protest eventually led to the Land Rights Act (Northern Territory) legislated by the Commonwealth in 1976.
