Proof of Identity

ATNS cannot comment on or provide proof of anyone’s Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity.

We understand that not everyone has access to records regarding their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage, and the search can be difficult. Unfortunately, ATNS does not provide proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity, nor can we advise on specific forms or applications.   

There are several organisations and services which can help you find your family – these organisations are generally state or territory based.

We recommend starting with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). AIATSIS has published information about proving Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and finding family.
