Treaty Process in the Northern Territory
In 2016, the Northern Territory Government committed to Treaty negotiations with Aboriginal Territorians. This lead to an historic meeting with the four Northern Territory Statutory Land Councils in March 2018, at which a Treaty Working Group was established to develop a Memorandum of Understanding.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the Barunga Festival on 8 June 2018 by the Chief Minister and the CEOs of the Northern Territory Land Councils. It requires extensive consultation with Aboriginal people across the Northern Territory.
In March 2019, Professor Mick Dodson AM was announced as the Treaty Commissioner. He is required to engage in community consultations and offer recommendations on next steps, along with a proposed negotiation framework for the Northern Territory Treaty.
