Treaty Process in Queensland
In July 2019, the Queensland Government signed an historic joint Statement of Commitment as part of the Tracks to Treaty - Reframing the Relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders initiative.
Under the Statement of Commitment, the Government has committed to a range of outcomes including a Treaty and Healing and Truth-Telling. Path to Treaty marks the next step towards reframing the relationship between First Nations Queenslanders and the broader Queensland community.
An Eminent Panel of independent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders and non-Indigenous Queenslanders has been established to provide leadership on Treaty negotiations. A Treaty Working Group has been set up to lead the conversation around Treaty and self-determination. As part of this, extensive community consultations were conducted in Queensland in late 2019.
